eyeDocs
Hay Design was retained to renovate 5500 sq.ft. of optometric space for the eyeDocs clinic at 1285 Kilborn Avenue, Ottawa, ON. Hay Design provided a full design concept, furniture plan, construction drawings, coordination with ME&S engineers, and construction management.
The current clinic was dated and did not function well as both an eye care clinic and a retail space for glass/eyewear sales and the support space was cramped and dysfunctional. Hay Design Incorporated completely re-designed the space to better suit the doctors, patients, and support staff as well as to increase sales with a modern, warm and inviting retail and waiting area. The awkward shape of the building envelope constrained the layout of the retail and waiting areas. The client required a modern, visually appealing, accessible and functiona showcase area to increase their glasses sales. HDI relocated the glasses sales area from the back corner to the front of the space to ensure all clients would see and walk through the retail area. Moving the location posed challenges with the lighting and glare from the large exterior windows. HDI coordinated adjustable lighting controls and window film as solutions. All finishes selected were evaluated on their sustainability; HDI chose to use reclaimed barnboard in the transaction counters as a sustainable and beautiful focal point.
The clinic was an operational facility and could not afford a long closure. HDI incorporated phasing into the design to allow construction to carry on while the clinic remained open and operational.
