Bambu Restaurant, Indo-Chinese cuisine
Hay Design was retained for the full scope of interior design services from conception to completion of construction. The client’s desire was to create a sophisticated, warm and inviting atmosphere serving Eastern Asian inspired fare within their defined budget. The intent was to create a different experience from their long-standing, highly successful Chinese restaurant – Yangtze on Somerset Street West, Ottawa.
The concept developed from the efficient furniture floor plan which incorporates an impressive wood & granite-topped bar as the central element. A large banquette seating area with a bamboo divider wall breaks up the floor plate, and a Sushi bar adjacent the Dragon Private Party Room at the rear of the restaurant, provides a Japanese influence.
Several challenges surfaced throughout the design & documentation phases such as base-building changes & the addition of a 2nd storey mezzanine. Absorbing sound among primarily all hard surfaces due to full perimeter glazing on the exterior, was achieved through the use of suspended acoustic panels over the dining areas. The original schedule was moreover extended by several months due to delays in the construction of the base-building. More coordination among disciplines was required due to the more complex nature of designing a restaurant.
