DESIGNERS DESIGNING THEIR OWN SPACE!

Hay Design Reception Area

When it was decided that Hay Design would relocate from 11 Holland Avenue to 824 Meath Street it was late summer of 2004.  The plan was to relocate by November 1st, two and a half months, lots of time - right....

Of course, clients always come first so the first few weeks came and went and it was the middle of September before we knew it! Two weeks of planning and one month for construction left. Feasible? Of course, we are most productive when we are under pressure!

With six designers involved, all with their own option, it was probably best to have limited time to design the space.  Our office space didn't have many functional requirements, besides open space, a boardroom, library and kitchen.  To create more of a challenge, Cathy insisted we incorporate as many of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as possible.

The LEED rating system has six categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environment Quality and Innovation & Design Process.

Hay Design implemented some of the simpler sustainable principles including: Resource Reuse, Recycled Content, Regional Materials, Rapidly Renewable Materials, Certified Wood, Low-Emitting Materials and Daylight & Views.

Designing to respect the environment increases occupant comfort and well-being and respects the community.  Hay Design is content knowing that we have designed our space to meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
